Oil Depletion, Climate Crisis, and the Renewal of Community
Every year the state of our planet gets more dire. Catastrophic climate change is
accelerating, oil production nears its peak and inevitable decline, and inequity
is ever-increasing. Yet the proposed “solutions” based upon new energy sources and
minor efficiency improvements are woefully inadequate. Real alternatives involve
dramatic changes to the American way-of-life, and can create a more healthy, sustainable,
and equitable world for generations to come. Around the world, people are becoming
more aware that they personally must take responsibility for their well being in
their local communities. What can you do?
This presentation will explore the challenges of our fossil-fuel dependent, over
consumptive society and the opportunities to heal our earth, renew our communities,
and enrich our lives. From community gardens and ridesharing to economic relocalization,
citizens around the world are pioneering a new society, bringing an unprecedented
sense of hope and possibility about our future. The presentation will cover this
global grassroots movement and what you can do to live more locally, and with less.
It will also explore Cuba’s response to the dramatic loss of oil, and how they’ve
developed a more sustainable, lower-energy society.
